I fiirst heard Laura Nyro through my older brother and his girlfriend (who became his wife for a while) back in 1966 when I was 8 years old! I /WE immediately fell in love with her sound and lyrics! I knew that the meaning of her lyrics would grow and deepen as I matured!😊 And that's exactly what transpired. Decades later and 1,000 miles away from my childhood home I was driving home on a bright sunny day when NPR announced that she'd passed and I wept/sobbed openly unconcerned who might see! It felt like a very close & dear childhood friend had died! Even though I knew she was dealing with cancer it was a major gut punch! But,I am So Grateful To Have Known & Loved Her Music Since I Was An 8 Year Old Boy growing up just outside NYC in northern NJ!

"Because Tina was trained as a painter, she's coming at playing the bass completely differently"...what a load of horses*t. What does that even mean? Why do people say such idiotic things? She was learning on the job. That is what informed her style. She wanted to play like James Jameson...who wasn't, as far as I can tell, a painter.

Tina’s simple but perfectly crafted bass lines were essential in creating the Heads’ unique sound … and how refreshing it was then (and now) to see a female on stage playing this masculine instrument. Brava, Tina!!!

As a kid I used to look on the disc for the composer, so I guess, like most, I heard of Laura from owning 5th Dimension, Blood, Sweat and Tears and Barbra Streisand records. But her own albums blew me away. The purity and passion in her voice could bring me to tears or smile and dance. That's what her music is to me.

There is music between the notes. Her bass lines are so good in that they give the other instruments a place to shine and in all becomes one big perfect sound. That is rare to have.

Yeah, her music actually tells the story of her life…it’s so sad that what killed her mother actually killed her too. I was lucky enough to meet her and talk for awhile at a women’s music festival in Northern California, she was nice and funny, I was so surprised at her sense of humor, loved it. I felt kind of bad because these stupid women didn’t have a clue to what she was, but it was great for me because I did and she took the time for me! I won’t say that I’m sure she was impressed with my knowledge of her music because we all know we’re Nyro nuts!!!!

At one time there were photo labs in companies all over America until a bunch of brain dead corporate accounts said we were not needed and its cheaper to call someone in job for job which turned out to be BS. Being an Icelander, I noticed that some of the photos from Tina's youth were taken in Iceland and the whole family was wearing Icelandic sweaters. I Googled this and found that they were actually living in Iceland as her father, the Admiral, was based here at the time. From now on, we Icelanders will claim Tina as our own.
